What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is used to help patients with any level of dental anxiety get the care they need in a way that’s relaxed and comfortable. Sedation dentistry uses a mild to moderate sedative (as the name implies) to help take the edge off during your appointment. At Hedgecock Dental, we are proud to offer IV sedation dentistry in Austin, Texas.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is one of the fastest and most effective forms of sedation, because it is administered intravenously and gets straight to the blood stream. You will almost instantly start to feel relaxed and lethargic, and will drift into a waking dream-like state. You will remain awake and conscious throughout the appointment, although some patients do relax enough to fall asleep, you will be easily awakened. The details may be fuzzy and your perception of time may be altered as sedation does produce some analgesic effects, so you will be all done before you even know it!

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation comes in the form of a prescription pill that your dentist will prescribe, and you can pick up at your local pharmacy before your visit. You will take the sedative about an hour before your appointment to help you relax. Your doctor will discuss any allergies or medication sensitivities before prescribing the perfect sedative to help you get through your dental appointment. Oral conscious sedation can be used for anything from routine cleanings to more complex dental work.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is the most commonly used form of sedation in dentistry. Many patients request nitrous oxide sedation to help them relax and have a much less anxious dental visit. Nitrous oxide comes in the form of a gas mixed with oxygen that you breathe through a small face mask at the start of your appointment. Nitrous tastes slightly sweet, and you will quickly relax into a euphoric, comfortable state that will make your appointment a breeze.

NuCalm®

NuCalm LogoNuCalm® uses safe, proven neuroscience technology to help patients with excessive anxiety relax – without the use of narcotics or controlled substances. NuCalm® naturally brings the body into a deep state of relaxation and idleness by simulating the “pre-sleep state”. NuCalm® topical cream or dietary supplement helps counteract the effects of adrenaline, creating a natural relaxation response. Microcurrent stimulation patches are placed behind the ears to bring brain wave pace into the pre-sleep stages. The process is completed with noise-cancelling headphones, and a light-blocking eye mask to negate audio-visual stimuli and maintain the NuCalm® relaxation state. The NuCalm® sedation system is powerful and effective at helping patients relax in the dental chair, without the need for prescription sedatives or controlled substances. NuCalm® helps our patients get the care they need in a way that is relaxed and natural.
